Parking Near the Space Needle and Seattle Center: Garages, Prices and Cheaper Alternatives (2026)

Where to park for the Space Needle and Seattle Center in 2026: garage rates, event-night prices, street rules, accessible and EV parking, and the $4 monorail shortcut.

Updated October 2026

For most visitors, the best place to park for the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass is Seattle Center’s own Fifth Ave N Garage, 516 Harrison St (entrances on Harrison and Republican). On a non-event day it costs $15 for anything from 2 to 12 hours, and Chihuly’s door is about a five-minute walk away. There are two exceptions. On Climate Pledge Arena event nights, book ahead or leave the car behind, and if you are staying downtown, the $4 monorail is quicker than driving.

Parking near the Space Needle and Seattle Center: the Fifth Ave N Garage at $15 for 2 to 12 hours against $25 an hour for valet

In brief

  • Where to park: the Fifth Ave N Garage (516 Harrison St, entrances on Harrison St and Republican St) is the closest city-run garage to the Space Needle and Chihuly. It charges $6 for up to an hour, $13 for 1–2 hours, $15 for 2–12 hours and $30 for 12–24 hours, tax included. Event pricing runs $20–$45.
  • Event nights: SDOT applies event pricing when a Climate Pledge Arena event is expected to draw more than 10,000 people (Kraken games, big concerts), Sundays and holidays included. The garages switch to event rates, and Uptown street meters go to $4 an hour for the first two hours, then $10 an hour, generally from 5 to 10 PM. Pre-book a space, or park downtown and ride the monorail.
  • Cheapest option: on a non-event weekday an Uptown street meter costs $1.00–$1.50 an hour (4-hour maximum, 8 AM–8 PM Monday to Saturday), and Sundays are free. If you are staying downtown, the $4 one-way monorail from Westlake Center takes 2 to 3 minutes and costs less than parking for one or two people.

Last updated October 25, 2026. Rates checked on the Seattle Center, SDOT, Climate Pledge Arena, Space Needle and Seattle Center Monorail websites. Parking prices change with demand, so treat every figure as a snapshot.

Where should I park for the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass?

Park in the Fifth Ave N Garage. Chihuly Garden and Glass recommends it and calls it “a five-minute walk,” and MoPOP lists it as its Seattle Center garage too. You pay the city’s flat tiered rates, the money supports Seattle Center’s free programming, and you come up on the east side of the campus within sight of the Needle.

Why not the Mercer Street Garage this year? Seattle Center’s Memorial Stadium redevelopment has blocked the 3rd Avenue N pathway between Harrison Street and August Wilson Way until spring 2027. Seattle Center now tells visitors heading to the Armory, Fisher Pavilion or the south end of the campus, where the Space Needle and Chihuly sit, to “use the Monorail or park in 5th Ave Parking Garage.” Mercer is still a good choice for McCaw Hall, Seattle Rep and the north end of the campus. For the Needle it adds a detour.

If you want a guaranteed space, apps such as SpotHero let you reserve private garages and lots near the Space Needle ahead of time.

How to read the private-lot prices: the “starting at” figures on SpotHero, ParkMobile and BestParking are teaser rates for a specific time window. They rise sharply for all-day stays, weekends and events. SpotHero’s own averages near the Space Needle are $15–$44 for weekend parking, $19–$51 for event parking and $19–$37 overnight.

Payment: the Seattle Center garages take cards, and ParkMe’s listing also mentions cash. ParkMobile lists the Fifth Ave N Garage for app payment, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and notes that the garage has no on-site security.

How much does parking at Seattle Center cost on an event night?

Expect $20–$45 in the city garages, more in private lots, and a queue to get in. On nights when Climate Pledge Arena expects more than 10,000 people, SDOT also switches the Uptown street meters to event pricing.

Major Seattle Center festivals (Bumbershoot, Folklife, PrideFest)Expect event rates and full garagesNormal or event rates, depending on the blockTake transit or the monorail; arrive before noon

What triggers event rates? SDOT keeps a list of the arena events that switch Uptown to event pricing. One example listing reads: “Sunday, October 4, 2026 · Kraken vs Calgary · 3 PM – 8 PM.” The street signs say: “Event Parking Pricing Area. Pay 8am–10pm. Non-event days pay 8am–8pm 4 hours max.”

2026 festival dates for context (all now past): Northwest Folklife ran May 22–25, PrideFest was on June 28 and Bumbershoot on September 5–6, 2026. For 2027, check the Seattle Center event calendar. Fall and winter bring Kraken hockey (NHL), Seattle Torrent (PWHL) games and opera at McCaw Hall, such as Seattle Opera’s Salome from October 17 to 31.

The Mercer Mess: Mercer Street links I-5 to Seattle Center and is the city’s best-known bottleneck. On event nights, Seattle Center suggests alternative routes via SR-99, Elliott Ave and the downtown I-5 exits “to avoid after-event traffic crunches.”

For arena nights, SpotHero and the Kraken + CPA app both sell event parking near Climate Pledge Arena in advance.

Can I park on the street near the Space Needle?

Yes. On a normal weekday it is the cheapest legal option, but read every sign. Many blocks around Seattle Center are SDOT paid parking, and the residential side streets in Uptown fall inside Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ) 13, where drivers without a permit get only the posted time limit.

What does a parking ticket cost in Seattle?

Seattle raised most parking fines on January 1, 2025, the first increase since 2011, according to a Seattle Municipal Court bulletin. The new fines range from $43 to $78; before that, most ran $29–$53 (KING 5). Some websites still show the old $44 and $47 amounts.

ViolationFine
Not paying at a paid space$65
Overtime or meter restriction$65
Exceeding a posted time limit$69
RPZ violation (no permit)$78
Parking in a disabled space without a valid placard$250 (SDOT says “up to $450”)

Scam alert: SDOT says it does not use QR codes for parking payment. A QR sticker on a Seattle pay station is a phishing trap.

Is there free parking near Seattle Center?

Only on Sundays and city holidays, and not when the arena has a big event. On a regular Sunday the Uptown meters are free and time limits generally do not apply, so a street space a few blocks from the Needle costs nothing if you arrive before the brunch crowd. Older forum posts saying meters are “free after 6 PM” here are out of date: Uptown is paid until 8 PM, and until 10 PM on event nights.

Accessible parking: the best options with a disabled placard

With a valid placard, use a van-accessible stall in the Fifth Ave N Garage (8 of its 24 accessible stalls) or the Theatre Commons ADA Lot. You can also park free at any on-street paid space, which in Uptown is often the cheapest and closest choice.

  • Street parking with a placard: under Washington law, Seattle lets holders of a valid disabled parking permit use general on-street spaces “at no cost.” Permit holders may stay beyond the posted time limit unless a sign sets one, and that limit can be no less than 4 hours. The 72-hour rule still applies. SDOT treats out-of-state and international placards the same as Washington ones. Placards do not cover private garages or lots unless the operator says so.
  • Fifth Ave N Garage: 24 accessible stalls, 8 of them van-accessible, one with an EV charger.
  • Mercer Street Garage: 67 accessible stalls next to the McCaw Hall skybridge. They are not van-accessible because of the 7'7" clearance.
  • Theatre Commons ADA Lot (2nd Ave N and Mercer): 6 stalls, 3 van-accessible, plus an accessible pick-up and drop-off area. A second drop-off area is on Mercer St between the Cornish Playhouse and the Phelps Center/Exhibition Hall.
  • School District lot (5th Ave N near the Harrison St campus entry): 6 spaces, 5 of them van-accessible, in the southwest corner of the lower lot. It is one of the closest accessible options to the Space Needle and Chihuly.
  • Drop-off: the Space Needle’s turnaround loop is open for loading and unloading. MoPOP has a covered drop-off with a three-minute load zone at 5th Ave N and Harrison.
  • If every stall is full: Seattle Center says to “check with the Attendant on Duty.”
  • Need help on campus? Call Seattle Center customer service on (206) 684-7200, ideally 10 business days ahead for arranged assistance.

Is Space Needle valet parking worth it?

Usually not, unless you are dining at the Loupe Lounge, travelling with someone who has limited mobility, or arriving in heavy rain with small children. Valet at the base of the Needle costs $25 an hour, with priority for Loupe Lounge guests and “limited” space for everyone else. A typical 2–3 hour Space Needle and Chihuly visit therefore costs $50–$75 plus tip, against $15 to self-park at Fifth Ave N. One 2024 visitor blog reported paying $45 for about two hours, plus the tip.

How do I get to the Space Needle without a car?

Take the Seattle Center Monorail from Westlake Center. The World’s Fair-era train takes 2 to 3 minutes and drops you between the Space Needle, MoPOP and Chihuly, which makes it the quickest way in from downtown.

Arena ticketsClimate Pledge Arena tickets include a free King County transit pass, valid on the monorail, from 2 hours before doors to 2 hours after the event

Other ways in

  • Light rail: take the 1 Line to Westlake Station, then transfer to the monorail. This is also the car-free route from SEA Airport. A Seattle Center light rail station is planned, but Sound Transit’s Ballard Link Extension page now gives an expected opening date of 2042, later than the earlier 2039, because of station location changes, an updated construction timeline and an extended environmental review.
  • Buses: King County Metro routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 13, 24, 29, 31 and 33 serve Seattle Center. The RapidRide D Line and routes 5 and 28 run along Aurora Ave N.
  • Rideshare and taxi: on arena event nights, drop-offs are banned on 1st Ave N. Use Republican St and Warren Ave N, the MoPOP turnaround, the Mercer St/McCaw Hall drop-off zone or the Denny Way/Pacific Science Center zone. After events, Climate Pledge Arena currently sends pick-ups to MoPOP and the Space Needle (Broad St). On normal days, the Space Needle’s turnaround loop works for drop-off.
  • Bike and scooter: there are racks across the campus and short-term racks on the arena’s east plaza. The BikeLink lockers in the 1st Ave N Garage are first come, first served. Rental scooters must be left in the marked sidewalk zones.

The cheaper alternative: park downtown and ride the monorail

This works well for one or two adults, and especially on event nights. For a family it usually costs more than the Fifth Ave N Garage. Downtown garages near Westlake list weekend app rates in the high single digits and up: SpotHero has shown Pacific Place Garage (600 Pine St) from about $7–$8, the 520 Pike Tower Garage from about $8 and the Westlake Tower Garage (1601 5th Ave) from about $17. Add $8 round trip per adult on the monorail.

Do Chihuly, the Space Needle or MoPOP validate parking?

We found no current parking validation at Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Space Needle or MoPOP. All three point visitors to the Seattle Center garages. A few partner deals do exist:

  • Seattle Rep sells discounted prepaid parking at the Mercer St Garage for its productions.
  • Pacific Science Center partners with SpotHero for reserved parking. Its south (Denny Way) entrance is closed, so enter from the north side near the Armory.
  • Lyft, Climate Pledge Arena’s rideshare partner, offers new users the code CPARIDES for 50% off two rides, up to $10 per ride.
  • Older reviews mention validation for Space Needle valet, but we could not confirm it for 2026.

Parking costs the same whichever ticket you hold, so the saving has to come from the tickets. The Seattle: Space Needle & Chihuly Garden and Glass Ticket ($78, 4.7/5 from 2,776 reviews) covers both venues on one date, which suits a single $15 garage stay of 2–12 hours.

Is it safe to park near Seattle Center?

Generally yes, but Seattle has a car-prowl (break-in) problem, and tourist rental cars are easy targets. Leave nothing visible.

  • Follow Seattle Center’s own rules: park in a well-lit area near other cars, keep valuables in the trunk, lock up, and “if you see something, say something.” Seattle Center Emergency Services is on 206-684-7272, or call 911.
  • SPD’s best tip: if you have to put bags in the trunk, do it several blocks before you park so nobody watches you load it.
  • History: KING 5 reported 95 prowls in the Mercer Garage in the first ten months of 2015, “nearly triple all of last year, when 36 cars were prowled,” while the Fifth Ave N Garage “experienced just two car prowls in 2015.” The data is old, but it is one more reason we prefer Fifth Ave N.
  • Report a prowl to Seattle Police (non-emergency 206-625-5011, or online) even if campus security has already written it up.

Can I park an RV, oversized van or bus near the Space Needle?

Not in the garages. The 6'10" lower-level clearance at Fifth Ave N and the 7'7" limit at Mercer rule out RVs and most high-roof vans. A tall SUV or a standard-roof van may fit P1 of the Fifth Ave N Garage (8'6") through the Harrison St entrance, so avoid the Republican St ramp.

  • Tour buses use the designated Seattle Center bus parking zones; see the city’s Bus Parking Zone Map.
  • RVs: stay at an RV park outside downtown and come in by transit. Open-air surface lots have no height limit, but the spaces are tight and you may need to pay for two.
  • Motorcycles: none of the official garage pages list motorcycle rates. Check SDOT’s motorcycle parking rules or ask the attendant.

What if the garage is full?

Head west or south instead of circling. In order:

  1. Try the Mercer St Garage (3rd Ave N, between Mercer and Roy). Accept the detour, or walk round via Seattle Storm Way (2nd Ave N).
  2. On non-event days, try the arena garages (from $7 an hour, 6 AM–midnight).
  3. Try the private surface lots on 1st Ave N, Mercer St and Denny Way.
  4. Give up on Uptown, park downtown and ride the monorail.

On event nights, have a pre-booked fallback on your phone before you leave.

Rates and details that may have changed

  • Prices move. Seattle Center says its rates “fluctuate with demand” and can change without written notice. App prices on SpotHero, ParkMobile and BestParking are “starting at” snapshots, not quotes.
  • Fifth Ave N payment methods: ParkMe lists bills and coins as well as cards, and ParkMobile lists app payment. We have not confirmed on site that cash is accepted.
  • Rideshare pick-up after arena events: Climate Pledge Arena’s current page says pick-ups are banned on 1st Ave N for 45 minutes after events and moves them to MoPOP and the Space Needle (Broad St). An older Seattle Center page says 30 minutes, with pick-ups at Thomas St and Taylor Ave N and at Dexter Ave N and Thomas St. We follow the arena’s more recent page.
  • Disabled-space fine: the Seattle Municipal Court lists $250. SDOT says “up to $450,” possibly including state assessments.
  • Uptown Triangle hours: one SDOT map shows paid hours ending at 6 PM, while the event-area signs say 8 PM. Trust the pay station on your block.
  • Garage capacities: about 1,015–1,021 spaces at Fifth Ave N (ParkMobile and ParkMe) and about 1,400 at Mercer (The Urbanist). The arena garage figures (about 1,600 and 800) come from a single secondary source.
  • Mercer Garage status: it has not been sold or demolished. Seattle Center plans call for eventual redevelopment, but the city’s arena lease commits it to keep running the garage until 2035 or until light rail serves Seattle Center (now expected in 2042).
  • Claims you may see elsewhere: one travel blog describes a “Space Needle garage at 203 6th Ave N” and a Mercer garage “at 6th & Mercer.” We found no official support for either. The Space Needle offers valet only, and the Mercer Garage is at 650 3rd Ave N.
  • Validation: we found no current validation at Chihuly, the Space Needle or MoPOP. Call ahead if it matters to you.
  • Motorcycle and RV policies for the Seattle Center garages are not published. Confirm with Seattle Center Parking on (206) 550-6430.
